-Contouring is done to create shadows...add some depth/definition to your face. In other words, it's a form of sculpting your face. You would use a product that is a shade or two darker than our complexion. For us women of color, particularly our dark chocolate sistas, I sometimes use a matte black eye shadow for when I really want the contour to show. Either powders, liquids, or cream consistency products all work great. The most common areas to contour are usually:
1.) Right Under Your Cheek Bone- some people do the "fishy" face by sucking in their cheeks and feeling along their cheekbone. For those of us who have fuller or "chubby" cheeks, this gives the illusion of having high cheekbones. For some of us who are blessed with naturally high cheekbones, you may contour lightly just to make it stand out a little more, or go as heavy as you'd like to.
2.) Along Your Jawline- to give the illusion of a slimmer face structure. Or sometimes if you have a double chin, contouring along your jawline and chin tends to make it less apparent.
3.) Sides Of Your Nose- to make your nose appear slimmer.
4.) Along Your Hairline & Temple- slimming your face and adding some more definition/depth.
-Cover Girl Queen Collection Bronzer (yes I know it's a bronzer, but it creates a beautiful warm contour)
-MAC Shadowy Contour Powder (PRO)
-Makeup Forever Contouring & Highlighting Palette
-Any matte black/regular brown or dark brown (cool or warm) eyeshadow)
-Benefit Hoola Bronzer
-Even a darker shade foundation
YIKES!!!
-Highlighting is done to brighten up the areas that the light would naturally hit. It also adds some definition/depth to your face. The most common areas to contour are usually:
1.) Under Your Eyes:- most common techniques is forming either a small triangle or a large triangle that reaches your hairline and blended into your contour.
2.) Bridge of Your Nose- to counteract the shadows/contour on the sides of your nose.
3.) Right Under Your Cheekbone Contour Yet Above Your Jawline Contour- just to make the contour more pronounce.
4.) Center Of Your Forehead- to counteract the shadows/contour around your hairline and temple.
5.) Cupids Bow (the little dip above the top of your lip)- makes your lips appear fuller/plumper.
6.) Center of Your Chin- to counteract the shadows/contour of your jawline.
Here are some products that I am familiar with that I would recommend for highlighting:
-Any concealer/foundation that is one-two shades lighter than your complexion
-NARS Albatross Blush
-Makeup Forever Contouring & Highlighting Palette
-Any light beige/cream/frosty colored eye shadow.
